Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

137.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction the scheme submitted to his Department to extend the Mallow water scheme to the Scarteen-Killargrohan area, County Cork.

The proposals for this scheme are under consideration in my Department. I cannot indicate at this stage when a decision thereon will issue to the local authority.

138.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction the contract document in relation to the extension and improvement of Naas sewerage scheme, County Kildare which were submitted to his Department in August 1971; and if he will arrange to have this work carried out as a matter of urgency.

The contract documents submitted in connection with an advance section of the Naas sewerage scheme are under consideration in my Department following the submission in April, 1972, of further technical data and report which were needed to enable a full examination of the proposal to be made.

When does the Minister hope to make a decision in this matter? Is he aware that the further development of Naas, industrially and for housing, is being completely held up as a result of waiting for sanction of this scheme? How soon could he have it done?

The Minister is aware of the importance of this scheme vis-á- vis the development of Naas and I will give it as favourable consideration as possible. I cannot yet give the Deputy any definite indication as to when it will be sanctioned.

One month, two months, three months?

I could not indicate when it will be.

139.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a health hazard exists at Cloughvalley housing estate, Carrickmacross, County Monaghan due to an open sewer near the perimeter of the estate; and if there are any proposals to remedy this situation.

The matter is one for the sanitary authority.

Under section 108 of the Public Health (Ireland) Act, 1878, it is the duty of every sanitary authority to inspect their district and enforce the provisions of the Act in order to abate any nuisance to which the Act applies.

140.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that untreated sewage is emptying into the river at Drumconrath, County Meath and creating a health hazard; and if he will state the action, if any, contemplated to remedy the matter.

141.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any proposals have been received from Meath County Council for the provision of a sewerage scheme at Drumconrath; and, if so, if he will indicate the present position in the matter

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 140 and 141 together.

No proposal has been received in my Department from the Meath County Council regarding the provision of a public sewerage scheme for Drumconrath. A proposal relating to a group sewerage scheme to serve 38 houses in the village has, however, been received and is under preliminary investigation.

Could the Minister indicate when this scheme will be ready to proceed?

The Deputy knows that that kind of question cannot be answered specifically. Meetings are being held about this matter and the future rate of progress of the scheme will depend on the outcome of the discussions which are being held. The Deputy should understand that.

Surely it should be possible to indicate roughly when the scheme can proceed?

It is not possible at this stage.

142.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to pay a sewerage grant to a person (name supplied) in County Cork.

This case has been inspected and arrangements are being made for payment of the grant of £25 at an early date.
