Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Addiction Treatment.

111.

asked the Minister for Justice the psychiatric treatment, if any, at present available in Mountjoy or elsewhere for persons convicted of drug addiction or drug offences.

The medical officer in Mountjoy Prison, or in any other prison or detention centre for which I am responsible, would as a matter of course arrange for appropriate treatment for persons in custody who need treatment for drug abuse. Should he consider psychiatric treatment to be indicated in any particular case, arrangements would be made for this with the appropriate regional psychiatric service. Should treatment in outside psychiatric hospitals or specialised clinics be necessary, this would be arranged, provided the authorities in these places were satisfied about the motivation of the offenders concerned. These facilities are regularly availed of.
