Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - ESB Power Station Extension.

92.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when it is proposed to commence work on the extension of the ESB power station at Shannonbridge, County Offaly; when it is likely to have the extension in commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the ESB that orders for the plant for the extension at Shannonbridge have been placed and construction work on the site will commence early next summer. It was originally expected that the extension would be commissioned in 1974. Work on it was held up by an industrial dispute which has been resolved and it is now expected that commissioning will be early in 1976.

Has the Minister any idea as to the approximate additional number of jobs that will be available in the area as a result of this extension?

Between the power station and Bord na Móna, the number of additional jobs will be in the region of about 300, that is, additional jobs between the two organisations.

The Minister referred to Bord na Móna. Does he mean 300 full time jobs or is he referring to part-timers employed during the season?

I have not got that information.

The Minister should be very careful about it because most of the Bord na Móna people will be part-time.

I know that. The number of permanent jobs with the ESB would be in the region of 50 to 100 but I will get the precise information for the Deputy.

It is good news anyway.

It is, and when we get the third going, it will be better.

In the same area?

Yes, in the same area.

And you and I will put our heads together and hammer this out at home.
