Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Airline Drink Charges.

97.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if drink at present available duty-free to airline passengers on international flights between Ireland and the member States of the EEC will cost normal lounge prices from the 1st January 1974; whether a regulation to this effect has been made in Brussels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Draft proposals by the Commission of the European Community in regard to duty-free sales to travellers, between the member States of the Community, including sales to passengers in flight, are under examination in my Department. These proposals will be the subject of consultation between member states before any regulation or directive in the matter is considered by the Council of Ministers.

The proposals do not envisage the abolition of duty free sales for consumption on board aircraft in flight.

The privileges will be continued after 1st January?

Yes; it is very much in the melting pot at the moment. There is no question of any cut on 1st January.

Let us hope it melts out altogether.
