Vol. 263 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Wardens Wages.

114.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce legislation so that the wages of traffic wardens may be disregarded in assessing eligibility for old age pensions, widows' pensions, et cetera.

Wages are a factor in assessing eligibility only in the case of non-contributory pensions which are subject to a means test, the purpose of which is to ensure that the available money goes to those whose need is greatest. It would clearly be inequitable to make an exception of the earnings from any particular occupation, such as traffic warden, in a matter of this kind.
