Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

116.

asked the Minister for Education the position regarding the provision of transport for itinerant children to the primary schools in Monaghan town.

I understand that the children concerned are availing themselves of free transport on a school bus which passes by their abode and arrives in Monaghan town at 8.45 and 9.40 in the mornings. The bus departs from the town at 2.45 and 4.15 in the afternoons. The children have been travelling on this bus since the 3rd October last.

117.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that children attending Macroom post-primary schools who are entitled to free transport are not carried by the bus as it is full on arrival at Doonisky from Cork; and if he will have the matter investigated.

Following representations recently made to me, I have had a detailed study carried out of the operation of post-primary transport services in the southern portion of the Macroom catchment area. I am happy to be able to say that, as a result of this study, CIE have been authorised to allocate an extra school bus to the number serving the area. The improved services came into operation on Wednesday, 8th November, and will resolve the problem to which the Deputy refers.
