Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Canadian Market for Irish Bacon.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of the fact that Irish bacon is on increased demand in Canada and has now reached an all-time record, he will ensure frequent supplies to the Canadian market; if the prices on this market will be higher than the EEC prices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bacon exports to Canada, which commenced in 1969 and have expanded significantly, are being suitably encouraged and assisted by the Pigs and Bacon Commission.

From a recent on-the-spot investigation of the Canadian market by the Commission, it would appear that the prospects there may continue reasonably good for some time.

While I see no reason why this market cannot continue to be developed after our accession to the EEC, I cannot yet indicate the precise export conditions that will then apply but the pigmeat position generally is due for settlement very shortly in Brussels.
