Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Feed Prices.

55.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a detailed statement in regard to the recent increases in the price of feeding meal components such as soya bean, meat and bone meal and fish meal.

Prices of animal feeding stuff proteins, particularly the three mentioned by the Deputy, have increased considerably in recent months.

Information available to me indicates that, since August, 1972, soya bean increased in price by 66 per cent, fish meal by 116 per cent and meat and bone meal by 28 per cent. It will be appreciated that these figures are approximate since the prices of these proteins, particularly soya bean and fish meal, are subject to world market fluctuations.

I understand that the present world scarcity of feedstuff proteins, particularly of fish meal and soya bean, is the main reason for the increases in these protein prices.
