Vol. 264 No. 8

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Grants.

82.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government the number of applicants on the waiting list for swimming pool grants; and if he will give an indication as to when an applicant applying now would be likely to receive a grant assuming the application is in order.

The financial assistance given by my Department for swimming pools takes the form of subsidy towards the annual loan charges on loans raised by local authorities either to build their own pools or to make grants towards the cost of pools provided by local organisations. The making of a grant in a particular case is a matter for decision by the local authority, subject to my sanction. There are at present six proposals from local authorities to make such grants before my Department awaiting sanction. It is difficult to say generally how long it would take to approve of a proposal—it depends largely on the capital available for the swimming pool programme as a whole and the merit of the proposal—but the Deputy can be assured of my intention to have swimming pools of a proper standard provided as soon as possible in all suitable locations.
