Vol. 264 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Offaly Radio Transmitter.

141.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to commence work on the new high power radio transmitter near Tullamore, County Offaly; if it will improve the RTE radio reception in Britain and if it will be possible to obtain reception of the Irish programmes in Europe; if he will indicate the approximate cost; and if it will result in a considerable improvement in the reception of Irish programmes abroad.

I understand that the planning work for a new high-power medium-wave transmitter station to replace the existing station at Athlone is well advanced and that it is hoped to have it in operation early in 1975. The site has not yet been finally selected.

I am informed that the cost of the new station is expected to be of the order of £700,000. It is expected to give greatly improved reception in Britain, but it will not extend reception to the Continent or further afield.
