Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Drivers.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda drivers allocated by the chief superintendent in charge of transport were accepted by each Minister and Parliamentary Secretary; and, if not, why the services of particular drivers were requested.

As the Deputy may be aware, it is in accordance with practice and precedent that, if a request is made by a Minister or Parliamentary Secretary for the allocation to him of a particular driver the request is acceded to where possible. In that sense, the allocation of the drivers has never been regarded as being a matter exclusively for the Garda authorities. There has been no departure from established procedure since the present Government took office. It has never been the practice to ask for reasons for a request for the assignment of a particular driver.
