Vol. 266 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Service.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if he will arrange with the public transport authorities for the issue of weekly or monthly tickets to school children.

Weekly and monthly tickets are available to school children on all CIE provincial train and bus services and on certain of their services into Dublin city from outlying districts.

In the Deputy's own constituency, the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company Ltd. provide many of the public transport services. Special monthly fares are available to school children on these services but there are no special weekly fares. I will ask the company if anything can be done about this.

In the Dublin metropolitan area there does not seem to be any such facility although it is needed badly. Will the Parliamentary Secretary look into this matter?

I will give the matter my attention but, as the Deputy is probably aware, the Department of Education are not the only authorities concerned. One has to have the agreement of CIE in relation to a matter of this nature.

Perhaps the Parliamentary Secretary will use his good offices with CIE in the matter?

I shall do that.
