Vol. 266 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Post-Primary Education.

5.

asked the Minister for Education his Department's plans for the provision of post-primary education in the Carrigaline area in County Cork.

Mr. R. Burke

A site is being reserved for a post-primary school in Carrigaline and it is the intention to provide a school when the need arises.

Could the Minister state when, in his opinion, the need will arise? What figures are available to him as to the post-primary pupils who will be seeking school facilities within the next five years?

Mr. R. Burke

I understand the county council planning officer stated recently that planning permission would cater for a population of about 3,000 in two to three years time. A site of 12 acres has been earmarked, as the Deputy probably knows, for post-primary development. The Department have proposed a community school for Passage West to replace the existing secondary top in the vocational school and it was envisaged that that school would also cater for Carrigaline. The county council planning officer, however, is of the opinion that Carrigaline will develop much faster than Passage West and it is now proposed that the community school be sited in Carrigaline rather than Passage West.

Am I to take it there will be one school for the area or will there be two? Did the Minister say one for Passage West or one for Carrigaline?

Mr. R. Burke

One for Carrigaline, a community school.

Passage West is not going ahead.

Mr. R. Burke

No.
