Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Health Council.

9.

asked the Minister for Health the present function of the National Health Council; and if he has any proposals to extend the functions of this council.

As regards the first part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question from him on 28th March last.

The answer to the second part is that I am reviewing the functions of the National Health Council, together with all other such bodies associated with the Department of Health, and, therefore, have no further comment to make at this time.

Will the Minister state when he will have completed his review?

I do not know. I have agreed to meet the National Health Council on 28th September and I will discuss the matter with them.

Has the Minister received any complaints or letters from the NHC about extending their functions?

No, I do not think so.

Was there no record of having received any submission or letter from the NHC?

No, apart from their last report, which is for 31st March, 1972. The report for 31st March, 1973, is not available to me yet. As far as I am aware from the information supplied to me, there has been no representation by the council or by any individual.

Would the Minister like to see their functions extended?

I would not be prepared to comment on that until I have had an examination of it.
