Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Nurses Enrolment.

23.

asked the Minister for Health if he will take steps to ensure that qualifications and conditions of enrolment for student nurses will be the same throughout the country.

I am informed that virtually all nurse training hospitals insist on applicants having passed the leaving certificate examination and that hospitals usually call qualified candidates for an interview to assess their suitability.

The syllabuses of training for general, psychiatric and other grades of nurse differ from each other in certain respects but all student nurses must undergo a three-year training programme and must pass a preliminary examination after one year's training and a final examination after a further two year's training, in accordance with the rules drawn up by An Bord Altranais who have certain statutory functions relating to the training and registration of nurses.
