Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Health Service Doctors.

24.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report about the difficulty the present salary scales are creating for the future for the whole-time doctor in the public health service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the report in question and while I appreciate the importance of the salary factor I do not accept that to the extent there may be difficulty in attracting suitable medical staff to the public health services the answer to the problem is necessarily higher salaries. The salaries for these staffs were recently the subject of arbitration, the outcome of which is not yet known and I have set up a working party to undertake a study in relation to the future provision of the public health medical services.
