Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon Psychiatric Unit.

33.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) that a 50 bed psychiatric unit is to be erected within the County Hospital, Roscommon, and that his Department recommended that to make way for this unit more surgical cases should be transferred from Roscommon to Galway and Castlebar hospitals; if he is aware that this is causing considerable discontent and is not in line with the recommendations to federate the Portiuncula and Roscommon hospitals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Agreement in principle has been given by my Department to the provision of a psychiatric unit of 50 beds at Roscommon County Hospital. It has not yet been decided whether a new unit will be built or whether it will be provided within the existing accommodation at the hospital. A decision will be taken on this matter after further consultation with interested bodies.
