Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Army Barracks.

98.

asked the Minister for Defence if any plans had been made with regard to a new Army barracks before 15th March, 1973; and if the moneys provided for this purpose had been increased over recent years.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his Question No. 47 on the 2nd May, 1973. Proposals in regard to a new Army barracks had been under consideration before I took office but the project had not reached the detailed planning stage and money had not been provided therefor.

Has money since been provided?

We are talking about something which would possibly mean the closing of a barracks in Dublin of 46 acres in area and worth a fabulous sum of money and the erection of another new barracks at considerable cost. After 16 years of inactivity you expect me to have it done in four months.

I wonder would the Minister look it up and find out whether in my time as Minister for Local Government it was proposed and suggested that one of the large barracks and surrounding area would be taken over by the National Building Agency to provide much needed housing in Dublin.

The Deputy is expanding the scope of the question.

Deputy Blaney's successor threw the proposal out immediately.

I will have it examined.

I wonder would the Minister consider the extension of an existing barracks rather than the building of a brand new barracks?

The Minister will consider everything but it is a very big matter and it will need serious consideration.

I hope the Minister will not allow pure parochialism to dictate a decision.
