Vol. 268 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Primary Education.

44.

asked the Minister for Education his plans for the future of post primary education for boys and girls in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary.

Mr. R. Burke

My Department's plans are that secondary education in Carrick-on-Suir should be organised on a two-school basis, a school for boys and a school for girls. A single school for girls has, in effect, been created by the coming together of the two convent secondary schools on a common site. The question of making a similar arrangement in the case of the boys is still under consideration.

45.

asked the Minister for Education the plans he has with regard to the selection of pupils for post-primary education.

Mr. R. Burke

All pupils who have completed 6th class in the primary school and who reach 12 years of age on 1st January of the school year are eligible for enrolment in secondary schools.

In view of a recent statement made by the Minister, is it his intention to take some kind of punitive action against those schools which carry out their own selection?

Mr. R. Burke

I am not quite sure as to which statement the Deputy is referring. There is no question of punitive action here. It is true that certain secondary schools hold entrance examinations for the selection of pupils but this is purely an internal arrangement.

46.

asked the Minister for Education the plans his Department have for the development of post primary education at Kanturk, County Cork; and the number of pupils attending the post primary school there this year.

Mr. R. Burke

My Department's proposals for the future development of secondary education facilities in Kanturk are that, in the short term, the boys' secondary school in the centre should amalgamate with either the convent secondary school or the vocational school and, in the longer term, that there should be one secondary school catering for all the pupils in the centre. The number of pupils attending the three schools in the convent school year is as follows: Convent of Mercy—250; Vocational School—328; Boys' Secondary School —47.
