Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home Heating Systems.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his attention has been drawn to a recent report that world supplies of oil will be exhausted within 20 years; and, if so, if he considers that local authority dwellings should continue to be fitted with oil-fired central heating systems.

I am not aware of any authoritative report on the lines indicated by the Deputy. I have, of course, seen various references to possible future oil shortages.

It is a matter for each housing authority, in the first instance, to decide on the method of heating to be provided in their housing schemes. I have no doubt that in making such decisions they will, among other aspects, keep in mind possible future developments in the international oil supply situation.

Would the Minister direct that in all future houses at least one fireplace will be embodied?

That is not in relation to the question.

It is a separate question.

My personal view is that there should be one fireplace, but it is really a matter for somebody else.
