Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Taxation.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in order (a) to encourage the car industry to build longer-lasting cars and (b) to support EEC environment policies, he will consider the introduction of an age-graded motor tax whereby the car owner pays less each year as the car grows older and no tax is payable after six years.

The introduction in Ireland of an age-graded road tax scale in favour of older cars would not in my opinion encourage motor manufacturers to build longer-lasting cars, bearing in mind the relatively small market available to them in this country.

Furthermore, the EEC proposals for an infrastructure tax relate such tax to road use and not to the age of vehicles.
