Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal.

128.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Transport and Power when it is intended to introduce legislation to enable the Grand Canal to be transferred to the jurisdiction of the Office of Public Works.

129.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Transport and Power if it is intended to transfer the section of the Grand Canal from Suir Road Bridge to James's Street Harbour, Dublin to the jurisdiction of Dublin Corporation with a view to having it filled in.

With your permission a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 128 and 129 together.

An ad hoc group, comprised of representatives of the Departments concerned, CIE and Bord Failte, are at present examining certain aspects of the proposed transfer of the canals to the Office of Public Works. On receipt of the group's report, legislative proposals relating to the future of the canals, including the section of the Grand Canal from Suir Road Bridge to James's Street Harbour, Dublin, will be formulated.

(Dublin Central): Could the Minister indicate when the Bill will be before the House? It was promised about 12 months ago. At that time the Department were preparing it. The stretch of the canal between Suir Road Bridge and James's Street Harbour is in a deplorable condition and requires to be closed.

I could not give an indication. I think the attitude of the Office of Public Works was that when there was a change of Government the new Parliamentary Secretary should have a look at it. That had a certain effect in holding it up. I know the problem there and I know the interest of Dublin Corporation in it.
