Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Department Staffing.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange to have some members of the staff of the various Government Departments on duty after normal working hours to deal with the public.

I am not aware of any demand for the facility referred to by the Deputy. Any such demand would, of course, be carefully considered.

In view of the fact that commercial firms make efforts to accommodate the public in this way, would the Minister not think the public service should do likewise?

As I have already told the Deputy, no demand has been made on the public service for the employment of its facilities. If such a demand is made it will receive favourable consideration.

People who have their work to do during the day could be accommodated if offices with at least one of a staff were open. It would be a great help for persons——

As I already indicated to the Deputy, if a request is made it will be considered, but it will be considered in the light of the additional expenditure involved. I would have to be satisfied that the service, if provided, would be used to an extent that would warrant such a service.

Would the Minister not think it would be a useful service?

I have given the Deputy a lot of latitude.
