Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Property Stamp Duty.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to reduce the level of stamp duty on private houses and office blocks outside Dublin.

The stamp duty on office blocks in non-designated areas outside the Dublin area was reduced from 15 per cent to 10 per cent with effect from 21st September, 1973, by an order of the Government under the Imposition of Duties Act, 1957, as amended. Office blocks situated within the designated areas are, of course, excluded from this charge to duty.

As regards private houses, there is no distinction for stamp duty purposes between the Dublin area and elsewhere in the country. I should point out, however, that in this year's budget, provision was made for a significant reduction in the stamp duty chargeable on transfers of property, including private houses, up to £10,000 in value. I might add, of course, that the purchase of new houses which qualify for the State grants is exempted from all stamp duty.

The question of any further adjustments in stamp duties is a budgetary matter and the Deputy will appreciate that I am unable to indicate in advance what proposals my budget statement may or may not contain.
