Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Japanese Fishing Boats.

66.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the Japanese fishing boats which were granted certain facilities in Ireland are now fishing in traditional Irish waters to the detriment of native fishermen; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that in recent months a Japanese fishing vessel has been carrying out fishing operations outside our twelve-mile exclusive fishery limit. The boat is legally entitled to do so.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary have investigated the reports in the papers that, in fact, they had been fishing inside these limits, and is he quite satisfied that they did not——

The information at my disposal is that the reports were incorrect. We are taking cognisance of the position and the Deputy can rest assured it is engaging the Department's attention.
