Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Miners.

74.

asked the Minister for Labour if the Government intend to invoke Article 56 of the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community to provide aid to help miners now unemployed as a result of the closing of certain Irish coal mines.

The question of whether any existing or proposed Irish programmes or schemes could be made the subject of applications for aid under the provisions of Article 56 of the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community is under consideration.

Is there a hope then that some of the closed mines may be reopened?

This is under consideration, but the financial aids that would be secured could only refer to redundancies since January, 1973. The special schemes have a similar limited application.
