Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement Ages.

75.

asked the Minister for Labour when it is proposed to fix retirement ages for women and men at 60 and 65 respectively.

To the extent that the Deputy is referring to national superannuation policy, the matter is one for the Minister for Social Welfare.

The question of retirement age in employment generally is a matter which is settled by free collective bargaining.

I have been following discussions in international organisations on ideas for flexibility of working life, including the desirability or otherwise of a fixed retiring age. Depending on the course of these discussions I shall consider in consultation with trade unions and employers whether any basis for agreement on legislative action is forthcoming.
