Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare Estate.

90.

asked the Minister for Lands when it is proposed to divide the O'Neill estate at Milltown, Newbridge, County Kildare.

91.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will expedite the transfer of a building site on the O'Neill estate at Milltown, Newbridge, County Kildare to Kildare County Council; and if he will explain the delay in this matter.

(Cavan): With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 90 and 91 together.

The formulation of resale proposals for the division of the property referred to had been deferred pending the outcome of proceedings for the acquisition of other lands in the locality. In the event, these latter lands were not acquired and plans are now being prepared for the disposal of the O'Neill holding which it is hoped to include in the current year's allotment programme.

The question of allotting a building site to the Kildare County Council is being investigated in connection with the allotment of the lands.

I would impress on the Minister that the handing over of a map to Kildare County Council indicating the proposed building site is not too great a burden to place on the Land Commission and that this should have been done before now. Is he aware that there is an urgent need for houses in that area and the county council had to put a CPO on another piece of ground in that area? I know that his colleague is very interested in seeing that houses are erected and I would like to see more liaison between the Department of Local Government and the Department of Lands in this matter.

(Cavan): The Land Commission will certainly be in touch with the county council on the allocation of these lands and will do what they can to facilitate them. Information available to me might suggest that the county council are not as interested in this portion of land as they were. That is my information.

Being a member of Kildare County Council I can assure the Minister that, while county council officials may not have a sense of urgency, the members of the county council are very anxious that this piece of land should be acquired.

(Cavan): I got the impression that the county council appeared to be interested in another piece of land about one mile away. If the county council are interested they should get in touch with the Land Commission again.
