Vol. 269 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - RTE Advertising.

23.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to prohibit advertisements for alcohol and spirits on RTE programmes; and when the ban will commence.

RTE does not accept advertisements for "hard" liquor. No decision to prohibit all liquor advertisements has been taken.

The question of advertising alcoholic liquor, other than "hard" liquor, on television and radio is being considered jointly by RTE, my Department and the Department of Health, which is concerned with drink advertisements in all media.

RTE have now introduced a more stringent code covering the advertising of alcoholic drinks on television and radio. The code is directed towards achieving more restraint and responsibility in such advertisements particularly in regard to their impact on young people.
