Vol. 269 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice when he proposes to introduce equal pay in the Garda Síochána.

There is provision in the national agreement, 1972, to which the Government is a party, for progress towards equal pay for men and women doing the same or similar work or work of equal value. The application of this provision to the Garda Síochána is a matter for discussion with the Garda Representative Bodies under the Garda conciliation and arbitration scheme. In addition, as the Deputy is aware, the general question of equal pay is the subject of a Bill which was introduced by the Minister for Labour on 3rd July last.

I am not in a position to make any further statement in the matter at this time.
