Vol. 269 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Health Lectures.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he will examine the feasibility of providing health lectures in schools.

Mr. R. Burke

Provision for health education is made in the national school curriculum.

The rules for national schools also provide that qualified persons may give lectures or talks to the pupils. It would be for the school manager in consultation with the health authorities to arrange for the provision of health lectures in the schools.

Health education is included in the secondary school curriculum for home economics, civics and physical education. In addition, a certain number of lectures by specialists is given. My Department and the Department of Health are in close co-operation in the matter of providing special services for schools in regard to drug and alcohol abuse.
