Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Travel Facilities.

169.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will grant free travel facilities to spouses of veterans of the War of Independence independently of the veterans.

The question of extending the present scheme of free travel available to veterans of the War of Independence and their spouses is a matter for consideration in connection with the budget.

I am quite sure the Minister will agree with me that it seems rather ridiculous that, while a spouse can travel free with her husband because he has the pass, she cannot travel free without him. Will the Minister bear that in mind? It will not cost very much.

I have noted with interest the Deputy's condemnation of the conduct and decisions of my predecessor.

I take that as a hopeful sign that there will be a change.
