Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - In-Calf Heifer Prices.

203.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will indicate the factors causing exceptionally bad prices for in-calf heifers in County Donegal; and if he will advise on future prospects in the matter.

In-calf heifer prices have eased due not only to the current supply-demand situation for cattle generally but also in the aftermath of the especially strong demand for in-calf heifers during the rapid buildup of cattle herds over recent years. I have no information to suggest that the prices are exceptionally bad in County Donegal as compared with elsewhere.

As I stated in replying to questions on 13th February, I have every confidence in the future outlook for the cattle and beef trade while recognising the existence of current short-term market problems.
