Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation.

215.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has any plans for the reclamation of hill and marginal land.

Generous grant aid has been available to farmers for the full reclamation of hill and marginal land since the inception of the Land Project in 1949, where the potential of such land justified the expenditure involved. The farm modernisation scheme makes provision for grant aid to farmers in the future for similar work.

In mountain areas where full reclamation is not possible the scheme for the fencing of mountain grazings and the supplementary keep scheme provide grant aid for the fencing of such lands and limited improvement works. These schemes are being continued until the proposed EEC Directive which makes provision for special aids in mountain and other less favoured areas is brought into operation.
