Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Prices.

222.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that calves, young stores and breeding heifers are being sold at very low prices; and the steps that will be taken to raise prices to an economic level.

229.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that weanlings and cattle under one year are being sold at less than their cost as calves; and if he will indicate the cause of this situation.

230.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how the present price for calves, heifers and bullocks compares with those which obtained during the same period last year; and the plans he has to restore confidence to cattle producers.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 222, 229 and 230 together.

In my reply of 13th February, 1974, to questions on the cattle/beef situation I outlined the reasons for the fall in cattle prices in the period since mid-1973 and the measures adopted to help strengthen Community markets. The fall in beef market prices has naturally weakened the demand for young cattle and breeding stock for the time being, especially having regard to the general fodder position recently. There are already indications however that the market is beginning to recover and I hope that we will see a pronounced improvement as the season advances.

Does the Minister expect them to pay just for the spring period or for the whole year?

I think I told the Deputy previously that forecasting is not a safe business but I am always full of hope and confidence.
