Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Votes.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government why facilities for postal votes such as those in operation in the UK are not available in this country for the disabled, the sick and people working away from home.

The reason why postal votes are not available to the categories mentioned in the Deputy's question is that the law as it is at present limits postal voting facilities to members of the Defence Forces and of the Garda Síochána.

Would the Minister consider agreeing to a small new section being included in the Electoral Bill which would provide that he could extend postal voting facilities to categories where he might deem it appropriate?

No, because it is not possible.

Would the Minister refer to his statement that this matter was under consideration by him? I am referring to his statement on the Electoral Bill.

I have already made a statement and there is no necessity to repeat it.

Can the Minister state why it is not possible?

I have already explained that on the Electoral Bill.

I am calling Question No. 15.

May I ask a question?

Question No. 15 has been called.
