Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tree Cutting.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange with county councils to lop or top trees alongside primary and county roads to prevent hazards to road users in the event of severe storms.

Road authorities have powers under existing law to require the cutting and trimming of trees or hedges which make maintenance unduly difficult or expensive, or cause an obstruction on the road, or cause danger by obstructing the view of persons using the road. These powers however do not extend to securing the felling, trimming and so on of dead or diseased trees which could be a potential hazard by falling on the road in severe storms. The position is being considered in connection with a general comprehensive Roads Bill which is in course of preparation in my Department.
