Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Housing.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will allow Kerry County Council to provide houses for persons who wish to return from England to take up local employment and who cannot afford to provide a home themselves.

It is a matter for Kerry County Council in the first instance to decide to provide houses for persons in need of accommodation. The council have 831 houses in construction, at tender or in planning and have sites for another 1,385 dwellings. Any houses so provided must of course be let in accordance with the scheme of letting priorities adopted by the council.

Provision was made by section 5 of the Housing Act, 1970, for the payment of subsidy on houses provided by a local authority for the accommodation of key workers brought into an area for new or expanding industry. Houses for the accommodation of industrial workers are also provided by the National Building Agency on the recommendation of the Industrial Development Authority and 72 such houses have so far been built in County Kerry.
