Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Pools.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now in a position to sanction the plans and specifications for an indoor heated swimming pool at Athy, County Kildare.

Plans and specifications for an indoor heated swimming pool at Athy were sanctioned by my Department on the 11th February, 1974.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding proposals for swimming pools in the following places: Cavan, Carrick-on-Suir, Roscrea, Dungarvan, Boyle, Arigna, Dunmanway, Callan and Templemore.

Acceptance of a tender for improvements to the existing pool at Templemore has been sanctioned and work is expected to commence shortly.

Sites have been or are in course of being acquired for the Cavan, Roscrea and Boyle pools. Plans and specification have not yet been submitted to my Department for these pools.

While the local authorities concerned have indicated their intention to provide pools at Dungarvan and Dunmanway, detailed proposals have not yet been received in my Department.

The Carrick-on-Suir and Callan proposals have been inactive for some time now and may not proceed.

As indicated in my reply to Question No. 95 on the 7th February, 1974, inquiries in relation to the overall cost and viability of the Arigna proposal are being pursued with the local authority.

In relation to Carrick-on-Suir, could the Minister say why it is inactive? Was it feared it would not be a feasible proposition financially?

No. Apparently the local people have given no indication that they want to proceed.

Maybe they are uncertain about the future.

If they are still interested they might contact the Department at their convenience.
