Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wicklow Road Improvements.

76.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any plans in his Department regarding improvements to The Mall in Wicklow town; and, if so, the progress in this matter.

In January, 1973, proposals were made by Wicklow Urban District Council for improvements to the road in question. The council were informed that, as indicated in my reply to a question on 5th June, 1973, Wicklow County Council have responsibility for this road and it is therefore open to the county council without specific sanction from me to carry out improvements to the road. Accordingly there are no proposals in the matter awaiting attention by my Department.

Might I ask the Minister if his Department would be prepared in view of the great cost involved to make a special grant for this work?

It would come under the grants to be allocated to Wicklow County Council and they would decide whether it was important enough to justify the allocation of special funds to it.

The Minister would not in this case make a special separate grant?

I cannot answer that by question and answer in the House.
