Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol Tax Revenue.

111.

asked the Minister for Finance the total revenue including VAT accruing to the State on one gallon of petrol, if the retail price is 50p per gallon.

The total revenue content—customs and excise plus VAT—of the price of a gallon of petrol sold by retail at 50p per gallon would normally be 23.91p.

Would the Minister consider a zero rate of VAT and also reducing the tax on petrol in view of the effect that the price of fuel in general has on the cost of living?

That would be a separate question.

As I pointed out in reply to a previous question, the revenue from the sale of petrol is below expectations as a result of the reduction in consumption.

It is almost 50 per cent of the total cost.

Would the Minister consider a zero rate of VAT and reducing the tax——

That is a separate question.
