Vol. 271 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade with Japan.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if any new plans are in hand to improve this country's trading position with Japan.

In the case of countries with which Ireland has an adverse trade balance my aim is to improve the position by encouraging the expansion of exports. A wide range of incentives and services is available to Irish exporters and these of course apply to the development of exports to Japan.

There has been a considerable increase in Irish export promotion activity in Japan in recent years and exports to that country in 1973 amounted to almost £7 million, the previous highest figure being £4½ million in 1972. In October, 1973, Córas Tráchtála organised a trade mission to Japan and a further trade mission is planned for August next. Córas Tráchtála expect to open an office in Tokyo shortly.

The recent establishment of an Irish diplomatic mission in Tokyo will of course also contribute to the development of Irish exports to Japan.
