Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Regional Planning.

112.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a statement on any developments which may have taken place as a result of the second European conference of Ministers responsible for regional planning held at La Grande-Motte last September.

The stated purpose of the second conference was to give consideration at the highest level to European regional planning problems and to lay the foundation for closer and more effective co-operation. The conference agreed on objectives for a European regional planning policy and the principles on which it should be based. The general resolution and the resolutions dealing with the five themes of the conference laid down a considerable work programme for the committee of senior officials whose task it will be to prepare for the third conference, which is likely to be held in 1976. There have been meetings of working parties dealing with cartography, terminology and statistics and with the use which might be made for regional development purposes of the European Resettlement Fund. These meetings are part of the follow-up to the second conference.

I should mention also that the results of the conference have been considered by the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe and I understand that their recommendations are currently before the Committee of Ministers.
