asked the Minister for Justice if cars crossing the border from the North on 17th May, 1974, were searched by the Garda or the Army.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Border Car Searches.
35.
If the Deputy means were all cars so searched, the answer is "no". However checkpoints were in operation, some throughout the day and others at different times, at various places all along the Border. At some of these points all cars were searched, and at others a proportion was searched.
The Deputy will appreciate that a permanent round the clock checkand-search of all vehicles is not possible and I could not agree to disclose what proportion would be checked on any particular day. I am quite willing to give the Deputy the details privately for his confidential information if he so desires.
Does checking of this nature take place each day since?
Around the clock checking?
Well, sporadic checking.
Yes.
