Vol. 273 No. 13

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Water Supply.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of a water shortage on the farm of a person (name supplied) in Kells, County Meath, and in neighbouring farms resulting from drainage operations, he will state when a dam will be erected on a drain in the farm to ensure that adequate water will be available for livestock.

A permanent solution to the water supply question here will be effected very shortly but in the meantime an adequate supply will be maintained.

Is the Minister aware that farmers in the area are without water at the moment? He promised in April that he would try to have this project completed in the early summer.

This matter has been examined and a number of alternative solutions were considered. I understand arrangements are now being put in hand to make sure that both men and materials will be available shortly to carry out the work and, if necessary, a temporary dam will be provided in the meantime to ensure an adequate supply of water.

When the Minister says "shortly" does that mean this week or next week?

I would say it would mean next month. I am referring to the permanent work. The Board of Works have informed me that, if there is need for a temporary dam in the meantime, they will put it up.
