Vol. 273 No. 13

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Installation Costs.

30.

andMrs. Burke asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will review the present system relating to the capital levy required from applicants for the installation and supply of electricity so as to make provision for the payment of the capital sum by instalments, in view of the fact that applicants outside grant scheme areas are unable to meet the cost of installation without undue hardship.

As I indicated in reply to a similar question on the 6th June, I have asked the ESB to prepare a comprehensive report on the future position in relation to rural electrification, including the question of capital contributions for new connections. I will review the matter on receipt of the board's report.

Can the Minister say when we will receive this report about which we have been hearing stories for some time?

From the information before me it seems likely that the report will be available before the House rises.

Can we expect a statement on this matter from the Minister concerned in the near future?

The undertaking given in the reply is that the matter will be reviewed on receipt of the board's report. I should think that the review would commence within the next month, let us say, before the end of July.
