Vol. 275 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Society Interest Rates.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to apply fixed interest rates for building society mortgage holders.

Determination of the interest rates payable by borrowers from building societies is a matter in the first instance for the societies but the Deputy will appreciate that in a time of fluctuating interest rates it is not possible for the societies to adopt a fixed mortgage rate which would be unrelated to the rates which they must offer to investors to enable them to attract and retain funds.
