Vol. 275 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - High Alumina Concrete.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that quick hardening high alumina concrete has been used in the construction of schools and office blocks; and if he is satisfied with the safety of such buildings.

Mr. Kenny

I am aware of the concern being expressed recently regarding the use of high alumina cement in buildings. I am not aware of any immediate safety problem but I am having the matter examined in relation to the buildings for which I have a responsibility.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the authorities in Britain are so disturbed by the possible danger to life in schools in which this type of cement has been used that they have evacuated the schools and transferred the pupils to other schools until they satisfy themselves that there is no danger?

Mr. Kenny

I am quite aware of the situation in Britain and in Scandinavia and in Germany in regard to this product. Does the Deputy wish me to give the information I have here?

No. I am simply asking the Parliamentary Secretary in view of the fact that the British authorities are so disturbed in relation to this, is he satisfied that there is no immediate danger here?

Mr. Kenny

The authorities in my Department think there is no immediate danger although we have certain buildings and offices in which this product formed part of the construction. There is no evidence so far of its use in buildings for which the Office of Public Works are responsible except in the case of pre-cast slabs supplied by one firm. The buildings known to be affected include an extension to Cork Prison.

It might be as well not to say what they are.

Mr. Kenny

We are concerned about it.
