Vol. 275 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Speed Limits.

4.

asked the Minister for Local Government the villages or areas for which Wexford County Council has requested speed limits; the dates on which the requests were made; and the up-to-date position with regard to them.

Wexford County Council proposed the extension or imposition of speed limits as follows:

On the 14th July, 1969, Clonroche, Oylgate, Camolin, Great Island, Blackwater, Kilmore; 24th March, 1970, Gorey and on the 25th August, 1972, Enniscorthy, New Ross, Wexford, Kilrane, Castlebridge, Taghmon and Campile. Following examination and inspection by the Department, draft regulations were prepared and the views of the county council on these were sought in May last but were not received. On the 19th September I notified all local authorities that the process of reviewing speed limits and recommending changes to be embodied in regulations would in future be initiated and carried out fully by them. The drafting of proposals for the amendment of speed limit regulations is now fully within the discretion of the local authorities.

Is the Minister saying all applications made by Wexford County Council to his Department are null and void?

As far back as July, 1969, recommendations were made about speed limits and, following an examination and inspection by the Department, draft regulations were prepared. The views of the Wexford County Council on the matter were sought in May last but no reply has been received. On 19th September I gave authority to all local authorities to have responsibility for their own speed limits. This was the proper thing to do.
