Vol. 275 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Entrance Requirements.

88.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider removing the ban on the entrance to the Garda Síochána of married men who are otherwise fully eligible.

As I stated in the House in reply to a similar question on the 13th June, 1973, the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána is not in favour of changing the regulations to permit the recruitment of married men to the force, in view of the difficulties which would be created in the allocation and transfer of newly recruited married men, having regard to their family commitments and housing needs.

I stated on that occasion also that the matter was one which would no doubt come up for consideration as part of the process of planning and development in the Garda Síochána and that I should not like to take any hard and fast attitude in regard to it. The position continues to be the same.

Question No. 89 postponed.
